Rail Safety Month
September isn't just another month; it's Rail Safety Month in California. In a state known for its bustling railway networks, we are faced with the unsettling reality of having the highest number of rail-related fatalities and trespasser casualties in the United States. As these statistics continue to cause concern, Rail Safety Month serves as a vital reminder of the urgent need to educate the public about staying safe around trains and railroad tracks.
The numbers from 2022 are sobering, with 97 injuries and 159 fatalities out of 256 rail incidents. However, it's crucial to recognize that all these incidents could have been avoided by adhering to rail safety practices.
This September, we are proud to partner with the North County Transit District’s (NCTD) to promote Rail Safety Month. This initiative aligns seamlessly with National Rail Safety Week, taking place from September 18th to 24th, 2023. Our shared objective is clear: we aim to educate the public about the vital importance of exercising caution when in proximity to trains and railroad tracks.
Jewel Edson, Solana Beach Councilmember and NCTD Board Chair, stated, “The safety of our riders and the communities we serve is our highest priority, and our goal is to achieve zero track incidents.” In close collaboration with California Operation Lifesaver, the Federal Rail Administration, the California Department of Transportation, the California Public Utilities Commission, and passenger and freight railroads, NCTD works tirelessly to enhance railroad safety and raise awareness about the perils of disregarding the signs and signals around railroad property.
As we offer these essential reminders during Rail Safety Month, our goal is to instill a sense of caution, vigilance, and commitment to Rail Rules within both riders and the community.
Remember, the best way to avoid a tragedy on the tracks is to stay off them and exercise caution whenever you are near the railroad. Keep these essential rail safety tips in mind:
- Only cross train tracks at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings, obeying all warning signs and signals posted there.
- Wait until you are certain it is safe before attempting to cross the tracks.
- Never drive around lowered crossing gates; they are there for your safety.
- Avoid stopping your car on railroad tracks.
- Refrain from walking, biking, jogging, standing, or taking photos on or near the tracks. Trains can approach quietly and swiftly from either direction.
- Stay alert around railroad tracks, avoiding distractions like headphones or phone calls that could prevent you from hearing an approaching train.
- When boarding the Pacific Surfliner, always stay behind the designated safety line on the station platform.
- If you witness an emergency at a train crossing, promptly locate the Emergency Notification System sign (usually posted nearby) and dial the provided number.
- Report any suspicious items, persons, or activity immediately to the Amtrak Police Department by approaching a uniformed officer, calling (800) 331-0008, sending a text to APD11 (27311), or by calling 911. Ensure you have these numbers saved in your cellphone for quick access.
Together, let's ensure the safety of our community and foster a culture of rail safety. Your commitment to this important cause is greatly appreciated.
