Daily Pacific Surfliner service through San Clemente will resume starting Monday, July 17
Daily Pacific Surfliner service through San Clemente will resume starting Monday, July 17. Train-only trips between San Diego and Los Angeles are returning just in time for Comic-Con, the X Games California Finals, and the start of the Del Mar Racing Season.
Service is able to resume next week because of the construction of a wall that’s 12-foot high and 250-long. Piles for the wall have been driven 32 feet into the ground. The wall stands between the slide area and the tracks.
San Clemente, plus several areas along the southern California coast, have been plagued with washouts, mudslides, and track instability for months.
On April 27, rail service was temporarily suspended when the slop behind Casa Romantica began to slide. Service resumed in late May but was again stopped on June 5 when additional sliding occurred.
Metrolink worked in partnership with the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency, which operates the Pacific Surfliner, and the Orange County Transportation Authority, which owns the track through Orange County, to build a temporary barrier wall to protect the track below Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens.
The City of San Clemente will continue to work to stabilize the hillside for the long term. The dimensions of the barrier are 250 feet long and 12 feet high, with the piles set 32 feet beneath the ground.
