Planet vs. Plastics Global Theme for Earth Day 2024

Following last year’s successful campaign, global Earth Day organizer EarthDay.org (EDO), has announced the 2024 theme is Planet vs. Plastics.

Planet vs. Plastics calls for the end of plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040 and an ultimate goal of building a plastic-free future for generations to come.

This emphasizes our collective commitment to tackle the plastics crisis head-on, aiming for bold 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040 and aspiring to forge a plastic-free future because recycling is not the answer. The 2024 theme sets goals for raising widespread awareness about the health risks of plastics, swiftly phasing out all single-use plastics, urgently advocating for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demanding an end to fast fashion. Join us as we work together to build a plastic-free planet for generations to come!

Plastic pollution is a global issue that destroys environments, diminishes biodiversity, increases global warming, and harbors immense potential to impact human health. Study after study continues to reveal a disturbing prognosis: if current practices continue unabated there will be an increase in hormonal illnessescancers, and cardiovascular system damage related to plastic production and consumption.

Plastic pollution is a global problem demanding a global solution. It is an issue transcending national borders, affecting every nation and citizen on Earth.

Brief History of Earth Day

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22,1970. The event was organized by Gaylord Nelson, a United States Senator from Wisconsin. He was inspired to action after witnessing the damage caused by an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in the year 1969.

Gaylord Nelson realized that there was a need for humans to become more environmentally aware and active in preserving our planet. He hoped that Earth Day would be a way to educate people about the importance of environmental protection.

Earth Day quickly became a global phenomenon. More than 20 million people participated in the events across the United States on the first Earth Day. Today, Earth Day is celebrated in more than 193 countries around the world. At present, more than 1 billion people around the world take part in Earth Day.
