Ready to make a positive impact in your community? The City is actively seeking volunteers for five vital citizen commissions—Budget & Finance, Climate Action, Parks & Recreation, Public Arts, and View Assessment. With 16 vacancies for two-year terms expiring in January 2026, now is your chance to make a difference.

The deadline for submitting applications is Tuesday, January 16, 2024, by 5:30 PM to the City Clerk’s Office. These applications will be distributed to Council for consideration with the Agenda Packet on January 17, 2024. Appointments are scheduled to take place at the January 24, 2024 Council Meeting.

Citizen Commission Member Requirements 

Citizen Commission positions are recruited annually and on an as-needed basis. Appointment terms extend until the end of January or when another appointment is made to that position, whichever occurs first.

Requirements of membership to all of the Council's Citizen Advisory Commissions are outlined in the Solana Beach Municipal Code (Title 2, Chapter 2.60, Section 2.60.005 General provisions) as well as Council Policy 5.

Current Commission Openings

  • BUDGET & FINANCE: Two (2) vacancies - terms will expire end of January 2026
  • CLIMATE ACTION: Four (4) vacancies – terms will expire end of January 2026
  • PARKS & RECREATION: Three (3) vacancies – terms will expire end of January 2026
  • PUBLIC ARTS: Three (3) vacancies – terms will expire end of January 2026
  • VIEW ASSESSMENT: Four (4) vacancies – terms will expire end of January 2026

BUDGET & FINANCE

This Commission provides input to Council regarding the City's operating budget.

Regular Meeting Schedule: Mon prior to 2nd Council Mtg of the month at 6:00 p.m.

Composition: 5 members serve at the pleasure of each individual Councilmember.

Position’s Requirements: At least 18 yrs. old * Resident of the City * Property owner within the City.

Vacancies: Two (2) vacancies - terms will expire end of January 2026

CLIMATE ACTION

This Commission participates in reviewing certain matters regarding reducing the City’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and implementing the Climate Action Plan.

Regular Meeting Schedule: 3rd Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.

Composition: 9 members

  • 5 Citizens/Residents appointed by Council At-Large
  • 2 Professionals appointed by Council At-Large
  • 2 Councilmembers (or 1 Councilmember and one from another position, as determined by Council)

Position’s Requirements: 

  • Citizens/Residents - At least 18 yrs. old * Resident of the City
  • Professionals - At least 18 yrs. old * Must be from the environmental or scientific community. * Resident or Non-resident
  • Two Current Councilmembers (or 1 voting Councilmember and one person from another position, as determined by Council)

Vacancies: Four (4) vacancies – terms will expire end of January 2026

  • 3 Citizen/Resident Positions
  • 1 Professional Position
PARKS & RECREATION

This Commission participates in reviewing certain matters regarding the City's parks, programs, and conducts certain City events.

Regular Meeting Schedule: 2nd Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m.

Composition: 7 members who are all appointed by the Council At-large.

Position’s Requirements: At least 18 yrs. old * Resident of the City.

Vacancies: Three (3) vacancies – terms will expire end of January 2026

PUBLIC ARTS

This Commission participates in reviewing certain matters regarding community art opportunities and conducts certain City events.

Regular Meeting Schedule: 4th Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.

Composition: 7 members who are all appointed by the Council At-large.

Position’s Requirements: At least 18 yrs. old * Resident of the City.

Vacancies: Three (3) vacancies – terms will expire end of January 2026

VIEW ASSESSMENT

This Commission is tasked with reviewing feasible solutions for development when an assessment request is filed and makes definitive decisions on projects utilizing the City's adopted guidelines/toolkit.

Regular Meeting Schedule: 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m.

Composition: 7 members

  • five serve at the pleasure of each individual Councilmember
  • two members are appointed by the Council At-Large.

Position’s Requirements: At least 18 yrs. old * Resident of the City * Property owner within the City.

Vacancies: Four (4) vacancies – terms will expire end of January 2026
